Design registration confers to its owner copyright in the registered design which provides monopoly for an initial period of 10 years extendable to five more years to commercially exploit the registered design. The design protection only protects the visual attributes e.g. shape, configuration, pattern, composition of lines or colors which could be judged solely by the eyes. In India, design registrations are governed by The Designs Act, 2000 and The Designs Rules, 2001.
